Horton Cemetery Work
Day
On the 3rd Friday and Saturday of June, 2006 we worked
clearing brush to uncover 4-5 acres of overgrown cemetery. We worked
with decedents, and volunteers. More Horton Cemetey work days to
come. Many thanks to all the hard work and dedication of our Horton
decendents and volunteers. Many more hours have been completed to
get the cemetery to look as good a the after picture, but many more
hours are still left to go.
The Horton Cemetery is covered in thorney vines and
can return to the before picture status within 1 month. This is an
exceptionally challenging cemetery. Often times this cemetery claims
some of our equipement. We plan on having at least two work day in
2008.
Our next big plan is to place a monument bronze plaque
with a list of all know burials to preserve the history and names so
no one will every be forgotten. This will also serve as source for
genealogist.
After clearing a hug amount of brush we found the
Woodsman of the World headstone for James
Horton (Peter's Colony Settler) 08/04/1816 to Abt 1879. After
digging about 4 feet down we returned to clearing more brush. Since
this is an ongoing project we will reerect this stone later this
Winter.
The Horton Cemetery was
established in 1848. The Horton family set aside 4 acres for family
burial. The cemetery was part of the original 320 acres James Horton
received as a single man as part of the Peter's Colony. A history of
the Horton family can be found in the USGENWEB archives. Many Horton
family members and other early settlers are buried here. The
Cemetery was divided into 3 section; a family section, a friends
section, and a black section according to Susanna Clark-Smith. The
above left picture is the state in which we found this Historic
Cemetery and the above right is our progress to date. The following
